Emily May Anderson (Penn State, Class of 2011)

Hello, everyone! My name is Emily, and I’m a poet. I’ll be starting my MFA at Penn State on August 24th.

I currently live in Columbus, Ohio. I’ve lived here for over six years, and I love my life here, so it’s hard to leave. I have great friends, a real sense of being part of communities (the poetic community and the queer community and my neighborhood community), I had a job I didn’t hate, a hilarious dog and a beautiful cat and an apartment whose windows show the skyline. In less than a week, I will be packing some of the contents of that apartment, the dog, and the cat, and driving to the middle of Pennsylvania to start a new chapter of my life.

As terrifying as it is to relocate and start a new chapter, I know that I am doing what I truly want to do with my life. I have a BFA in creative writing from Bowling Green State University. I graduated in 2000, so I’m 31 years old now, and I’ve always wanted to go to grad school, but life got in the way and kept me from applying until this past year. I am nervous about being back in the classroom again after being out of school for so long, but I am looking forward to it, and I feel very strongly that this is what I’m meant to be doing.

I'm a vegetarian, a runner, and basically a big nerd. I love black coffee and red wine and being outside in the sunshine. I blog about poetry, books, and life in general at Rice in the Cupboard, and I’m also on twitter with the username emander.

I don’t know what else to say in terms of introduction right now, but I am happy to be part of the MFA Chronicles, and I look forward to hearing about everyone’s experiences this year. It is an exciting time for all of us!

  1. Emily, you have the same name as my twin sis! Best of luck at Penn State. It sounds like a great program.

I also love running! I'm trying to map new routes in Bloomington, but I really miss my old ones.

  2. It's great you made the back to school plunge! I couldn't wait to get out of AZ again, but I can imagine how hard it must be for those of you who are leaving cities/situations you love.

  3. Driving long distances with pets in tow is no fun. I'm moved with my cat, Yoshimi. She was much calmer in the car than I thought she'd be, but I was glad I took a road trip buddy with me because she really wanted to sit in my lap while I drove and that didn't seem like the best of ideas. What are your animals names? Hope all goes well with transporting them. Nice to meet another poet. :-)

  4. Yay Emily. Thanks for all the recommendations as to what to do in Columbus. I can't wait to tackle the places you named to me! Penn is going to be a lot of fun for you!

  5. Hey everyone! The past week or so has been nuts and I'm just now getting back here to the blog.

Bethany - I know what you mean about running routes. I've heard there are some good trails around Penn State, and I'm looking forward to checking them out, but I still miss the old ones.

Wahida - Yeah, it's pretty crazy to move, but I'm not that far away, I guess.

Keely - My pug is named Lucky; he rode in the car with my friends who came to help me move. My cat is Jade; she came in the moving truck with me and was quiet and good the whole time.

Tory - No problemo. I look forward to hearing how you like Columbus!
